The "White War"

The White War was fought on this territory from 1915 until 1918. The Italo-Austrian border wound its way along the mountain tops of the Adamello Brenta group. Passo Tonale was pinpointed by the Italians as an eventual location to launch an attack against the Austrians. The only point of defence that the Italians had was the fort at Corno d’Aola in Ponte di Legno. The Austrians, on the other hand, had 5 forts all located in planned strongholds.

The cruel battles fought here have left their mark and there are still visible traces throughout the territory: trenches, camps, forts and entire military villages, and they often form part of excursions and guided tours of the area. There are numerous tours on offer allowing the possibility of visiting the sites of all the battles fought here. In the museums in Temù and Vermiglio you can see first hand the relics and wartime memorabilia found in these mountains.
