What to do in Monno
The Mortirolo Pass is the true protagonist of Monno. Made famous by the Giro d’Italia, it is a coveted destination for cyclists from all over the world, ready to take on one of the most demanding climbs in the Alps. However, there are many other ways to experience it: in summer, walks and excursions cross a high‑altitude environment where larch trees gradually give way to alpine heath and, in June, to blooming rhododendrons. In winter ski mountaineering trails crisscross the entire area. It is no coincidence that every first Sunday of March the traditional Mortirolo Gathering takes place here, dedicated to enthusiasts of this sport.
The history of Monno and the Mortirolo Pass
The Mortirolo Pass also played a fundamental role in the history of Monno. According to tradition, in 773 this area was the setting of the battle between the Lombards, led by Adelchi, and the Franks of Charlemagne. This episode later entered literature thanks to Alessandro Manzoni, who evoked the clash in his tragedy Adelchi.
