P3 Pontedilegno - Pegrà

In this medium-difficulty circular route you can explore some lovely hidden corners of the Adamello National Park. The sunny meadows of Vescasa Alta and Bassa are well worth visiting for their characteristic stone cottages, wild flowers and panoramic views. From the western end of Ponte di Legno, near the swimming pool (“Piscina”) follow via Alpini towards Tonale (away from the town of Ponte) through the houses until it ends with a bend to the left. Here there is a little chapel and parking spaces for a few cars. Take the path at the right of the chapel, marked “Muracc” no.3 (white and blue), then later the no.45. After a few minutes walking steeply uphill, you will go under the viaduct of the main road to Tonale then carry on up the steep slope of the old road to the pass.

At the next junction stay on the main path which bears left marked “Vescasa”; the right turn marked Pegra is the route we will return on.

You now come out onto the main road near a dangerous bend – cross the main road and take the small path off it uphill through a gap in a stone wall to your right.. Carry on along the white and blue marked path and you will come out of the woods at the edge of the meadows of Vescasa bassa (around 1600m).

Follow the flat path off to the left towards the houses then go uphill to the right along the edge of the flowery fields and a stream. You will then arrive at the attractive “Alpeggio” (alpine hamlet) of Vescasa Alta (1719m, 1.30-1.45 hours approx.) set on a beautiful panoramic balcony overlooking the Camonica valley and the peaks which surround Ponte and Tonale. These meadows are covered with an enormous variety of wild alpine flowers, butterflies, bees and birds from the end of May until the beginning of July. Walking through the houses, the path leads to the right until it meets the main road to Tonale again. Cross it and enter the fields below (not well signposted) and take the first right leading onto the ski piste to the left of the large mid-point ski-lift gondola station.

Follow on along the piste through the woods until you get to a bend where a right turn is signposted. Take this path through the woods, leaving the ski piste. This path, with a few steep downhill stretches takes you back to the path where you started (3-3.30 hours total without stops).
